Activity 8 · Radical collaboration

Your Design Team

You can't design a life alone. A small team of people who care about you — and will tell you the truth kindly — makes the whole thing lighter and better. Three to five is plenty.

Who's on a team?

SupportersThey cheer you on and care about your progress.
PlayersActive participants in your projects and plans.
IntimatesClose family or friends your design will affect.
MentorsThey offer counsel — helping you figure out what you think.

Counsel, not advice

A good mentor gives counsel (“tell me more — what are you weighing?”), not advice (“here's what I'd do”). If you hear “If I were you…”, gently steer back to your own thinking. You want their questions and stories, not their answers.

Keep it kind, keep it private, everyone joins in, and keep it constructive — building each other up, not judging.
